Which office bag actually fits a 14-inch laptop?
"Fits a laptop" is the vaguest claim in bag listings. Here is how to check before you buy — and the internal dimensions that actually matter for a 14-inch machine.
A 14-inch laptop is roughly 32 cm wide, 22 cm deep and 1.8 cm thick, though thin-and-light models vary. For a bag to carry one comfortably — not just technically — the internal compartment needs at least 34 cm of width and 24 cm of height, plus room for a charger.
The three numbers to look for
Internal width, not external. A bag advertised as 35 cm wide may have 31 cm of usable space once the lining, padding and side seams are accounted for. Look for stated internal dimensions, or add 3 cm of tolerance to your laptop's width.
Opening width. A tote 36 cm wide at the base but tapering to 28 cm at the zip will not take a 14-inch laptop without a fight. Structured, straight-sided shapes work; trapezoid shapes usually do not.
Base rigidity. A soft-bottomed bag lets the laptop's corners press into the floor every time you set it down. A reinforced base is what keeps a screen intact over a year of commuting.
Silhouettes that work
Structured totes are the most reliable choice — straight sides, wide opening, and enough depth for a charger and a water bottle alongside the machine.
Laptop backpacks distribute weight best for longer commutes and are the right call if you walk more than ten minutes on either end of a train ride.
Slings and crossbody bags are for a tablet or an 11-inch machine. A 14-inch laptop in a sling sits awkwardly against the back and strains the strap mount.
One test to run at home
Measure your laptop, add 2 cm to each side, and cut a piece of cardboard to that size. When the bag arrives, slide the cardboard in. If it goes in flat without bending, the laptop will too — and you have an answer in ten seconds instead of after a week of daily annoyance.
Questions we get asked
FAQ
- What internal size fits a 14-inch laptop?
- Aim for at least 34 cm wide and 24 cm tall internally. A 14-inch laptop is around 32 x 22 cm, and the extra tolerance accounts for lining, padding and a sleeve.
- Is a tote or a backpack better for a laptop?
- A backpack distributes weight better for commutes with significant walking. A structured tote is better for short door-to-desk trips and formal settings.
- Can a sling bag carry a laptop?
- A large sling handles a tablet or an 11-inch laptop. For 13 inches and above, use a tote or backpack with a padded compartment.
- Do POLO HILL bags have padded laptop compartments?
- Our laptop backpacks include a padded sleeve. For totes, check the product page dimensions and pair with a separate sleeve if you carry a machine daily.
